This is the article going to explains the Parts and the function of earphones. You can also read about how do earphones are work?
Scroll up to read very important parts of earphones.
Parts of earphone
The parts of the earphones can be classified into three,
- Earbud shell
- Earphone chord
- Driver unit
External parts and function of earphone
Earbuds shell
An earbud shell is an enclosure that comprises a magnet, diaphragm, coil. The earbud shell protects and holds all the parts. It is made up of plastic with less weight.
Parts of the Earphone jack
Earphone chords are nothing but connectors. The cylindrical shape of earphone cords has 4 contacts that connect ground wire, left earphone wire, and right earphone wire and mic.
The size of the earphone cord should be at least 3.5 mm for better audio.
Internal parts of the earphone
Driver Unit
- Diaphragm,
- Copper Coil,
- Magnets, and
- Earphone cords
Diaphragm
The diaphragm is a very thin transparent film surrounded by a ring for support and it is the topmost layer of the driver unit. The diaphragm has a flexible texture.
The main function of the diaphragm in earphones is to convert the magnetic gap vibration into sound waves.
Copper coil
The copper coil is attached to the diaphragm. Whenever current flows through the coil it generates a magnetic field around it and acts as a temporary magnet.
In simple, the coils of the diaphragm change into magnets due to electromagnetism. Copper coil act as a temporary magnet when an electric current passes through it.
The copper coil is also known as the voice coil.
Permanent Magnets
The permanent magnet is placed next to the copper coil or voice coil. The permanent magnet repels and attracts the voice coil due to alternating current.
How do earphones work?
The function of earphones is easy to understand. So let us start to read about it. The basic function of earphones is to produce sound. It converts the electrical signal into sound waves.
Well, You already know about the parts of the earphone. So I start with the earphone cord.
The conducting material of the earphone cord sends the electric current to the driver unit. According to electromagnetism, a voice coil or copper coil generates a magnetic field when an electric current passes through it. As a result, the voice coil changes to a temporary magnet.
In the driver unit, we already have the permanent magnet. Now, these two magnets attract and repel due to the front and back movement of the alternating current.
Attraction and repulsion of movement result in the movement of the diaphragm. The movement of the diaphragm produces a sound wave that our ears hear.
Conclusion
Is it important to know how earphones work? Yes, it is important to know about the function of earphones. It not only helps in choosing the right pair, but it creates interest in electromagnetism ie., Magnetism in electric current.
Learning about the functionality of electronic gadgets brings practical knowledge in electrical and electronic subjects.
I have an earphone which only works on one side and its price is 1.2 dollars😁
